Alasdair Santini (Liverpool)
Alasdair Santini is a Consultant in Trauma and Orthopaedics at Liverpool University Hospitals FT where he specialises primary and revision knee arthroplasty, arthroscopic surgery to the knee and hip arthroplasty. He lives in Cheshire and is married with three sons.
He was educated at The Edinburgh Academy and then at The University of Sheffield. He is a fellow of both the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow and the Royal College of Surgeons of England. His higher training in orthopaedics was on the Mersey Orthopaedic Rotation and involved a year at Wrightington Hospital and a Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow sponsored travelling fellowship to visit Dr Leo Whiteside in St Louis, USA.
He is the current Treasurer for BASK as well as the President of the Grosvenor Orthopaedic Club and Managing Partner of the Bone and Joint Centre. He is an honorary clinical lecturer at The University of Liverpool and has a number of peer reviewed publications.
Alasdair Santini was a keen fencer, having been captain of The University of Sheffield team but currently keeps fit by skiing and coaching junior rugby. He is a lifetime ticket holder of seats at Murrayfield so he can follow Scotland’s rugby internationals.


Leela Biant (Manchester)
Leela Biant is the President of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee and the King James IV Professor, The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. She is Academic Head of Dept Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery at University of Manchester, Honorary Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon, Manchester University Hospitals an is Co-Director of the regional North West Joint Preservation Service, serving a a poulation of over 7 million patients for Cartilage Repair and Regeneration. Leela trained in London and completed specialist fellowships in Sydney and London.
She was Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon in Edinburgh for 8 years before moving to Manchester. Her thesis was entitled ‘Articular Cartilage Injury and Repair in the Young Adult Knee’ and her research focus includes biological regenerative surgery and advanced joint replacement. She has won multiple awards for research, and now leads a strong research team that includes academic clinicians, biomedical engineers, materials scientists and cell biologists. Leela is an elected ICRS Senior Fellow, and founded the ICRS Global patient registry. She is a Lifetime Honorary Fellow of the UK Biological Knee Society in recognition of her work in this field. She has won awards for teaching, and is a clinician advisor to NICE. She was an ABC Travelling Fellow in 2010 and BASK Travelling Fellow in 2014.


Chim Gupte (London)
Mr Chinmay Gupte is a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Clinical Reader (Associate Professor) in knee and trauma surgery at Imperial College, London.
His main interests are in the diagnosis and treatment of sports knee injuries and knee arthritis, in particular cruciate ligament surgery, meniscal repair, patellar stabilisation, children’s knee surgery and knee replacement. He has published over 95 papers in fields including the anterolateral ligament and lateral tenodesis, posterior cruciate ligament and meniscal biomechanics, orthopaedic simulation and joint fluid metabonomics.
As director of training for trauma and orthopaedics for London deanery NW Thames (2011-2018) Mr Gupte helped reshape training for the consultants of the future in this region. He is also ex President of the Royal Society of Medicine Orthopaedics Section having served as President in 2012, and is an executive member and Trustee of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee and a member of the Royal College of Surgheons Research Committee. He has also served on the British Orthopaedic Association Committee for Research and on the Main Committee/Board of the Marylebone Cricket Club.
He was awarded a PhD from Imperial College in 2004 for his work on the meniscofemoral knee ligaments and their role in knee arthritis and ligament injury. He won the British Orthopaedic Association Robert Jones Gold Medal Proxime Accessit in 2005.
His time as captain of Oxford University and professional cricketer has given Chinmay added insight into the unique needs of sportsmen in returning to sport after injury; experience that he brings to bear in his clinical practice. He is also a governor of John Lyon School, Harrow.


James Murray (Bristol)
James started his practice as an orthopaedic consultant in Bristol in 2007. He holds an elective NHS Consultant post at The Avon Orthopaedic Centre in Southmead Hospital, North Bristol NHS Trust, where he is the Specialty Lead for Knee Surgery, previously having been Director for Elective Orthopaedics 2017 – 2020, Director for Trauma from 2008-2012. James is an Honorary Lecturer at the University of Bristol Medical School.
James graduated from Cambridge University, underwent basic surgical training in Oxford before working in knee and hip research in Newcastle. He then entered orthopaedic specialist training in the Wessex Deanery and won the EndoPlus Knee Prize in 2005. In 2006, he spent a Fellowship year in Sydney, Australia at the internationally renowned Australian Institute of Musculoskeletal Surgery, gaining valuable experience in sports injuries and joint replacement surgery under the supervision of Merv Cross, whilst also spending time with Leo Pinczewski, David Wood and Justin Roe. That same year he was awarded the British Association of Surgery for the Knee travelling fellowship.
James has a keen research and training interest having written numerous published peer-reviewed papers (over 60) and his first book, A to Z of Musculoskeletal and Trauma Radiology, which was published in June 2008. He is also a current reviewer for scientific journals, including the Bone and Joint Journal and The Knee, having previously reviewed for Injury, Acta Orthopaedica and Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research. James leads on a number of trials and contributes to others as a co-investigator; he works closely with his colleagues as a member of the Bristol Knee Group which carries out research and teaching related to knee surgery both in the UK and internationally. He is a member of both national (BASK Working Groups for Meniscus, ACL Prevention, Arthroplasty and Revision Knee Surgery) and international collaborative consensus groups (International Consensus Meeting for Prosthetic Joint Infection 2018). James is the current BASK (British Association of Surgery for the Knee) Education Representative, sitting on the BASK Executive since March 2019.
His extensive experience has enabled him to offer a comprehensive knee service from ligament reconstruction, meniscal and cartilage surgery, osteotomy, partial, total and revision knee replacement. He leads the Bristol service for prosthetic joint infection of the knee, which runs via a multidisciplinary team at Southmead Hospital. He is well-known to encourage early post-operative mobility with enhanced recovery techniques, such as minimally-invasive muscle-sparing knee joint replacement, avoidance of tourniquets and local anaesthetic infiltrative techniques.
James has a keen sporting interest, previously playing competitive squash, athletics and rugby, but now he tends to be more of a spectator, but still coaches rugby, plays recreational squash and loves skiing! He is also a keen pianist, playing anything from Blues to Classical. He is married to a local GP at Bristol University Students’ Health Service and together they have three children.


Stephen McDonnell
Associate Professor and Consultant Knee Surgeon
Stephen McDonnell is an Associate Professor at the University of Cambridge and an Honorary Consultant Knee Surgeon. His research interests are Knee injuries, identifying and stratifying patients with early knee osteoarthritis, and defining their phenotypic features.
His interests in Knee injuries include prevention, stratification tools, and treatments. He has led the James Lind Alliance for the priorities in Soft tissue knee injuries; he is currently undertaking work developing the CamKIT - Cambridge Knee Injury Toolkit. He leads an NIHR Multi Centre International randomized control trial, ACL STARR, for ACL repair vs. ACL reconstruction.
He works closely with the Department of Radiology using novel imaging techniques. This aims to provide a personalised treatment for the different phenotypes of early knee OA. He was the center coordinator for the EU ADIPOA2 clinical trial investigating the safety and efficacy of autologous adipose-derived stem cells in the treatment of advanced OA of the knee and the PI for EU Starstem project understanding how stem cells and extracellular vesicles lead to healing using photoacoustic imaging techniques. He undertook his previous research MD and orthopaedic surgical training in Oxford, based at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre.
He remains a busy clinical knee surgeon treating children's and adult knee injuries. He undertook a specialist knee and hip “Sports and Joints” fellowship in Melbourne with the Melbourne Orthopaedic Group.


Abtin Alvand
Abtin Alvand is a Consultant Knee Surgeon with an NHS practice based at the world-renowned Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford. His practice focuses entirely on knee arthroplasty (Unicompartmental, Total, and Revision). He is one of the highest volume revision knee surgeons in England based on the National Joint Registry.
Abtin graduated from the University of London and completed his Orthopaedic training on the Oxford rotation. He has a particularly strong background in surgical education having previously completed a PhD at the University of Oxford focusing on simulation-based surgical training methods to improve surgical performance in unicompartmental knee replacement. He was appointed to the prestigious post of NIHR Academic Clinical Lecturer at the University of Oxford in 2015, and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer (Associate Professor) in 2017. He undertook two post-CCT sub-specialist clinical fellowships focusing on complex hip and knee surgery in Oxford and Stanmore (Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital). He was a European Bone & Joint Infection Society Travelling Fellow and completed a fellowship focusing on peri-prosthetic joint infection at the Rothman Institute (Philadelphia, USA) with Prof. J Parvizi.
Abtin has published widely in the field of knee surgery and has over 70 peer-reviewed publications and over 300 national and international presentations. Currently, his research and clinical work revolve around prosthetic joint infection, revision arthroplasty, and unicompartmental knee replacement. He has also been a member of the BASK Revision Knee Working Group which helped develop guidelines to improve the management of patients with problematic knee replacements. He has published and lectured widely in the field of simulation-based surgical training and have previously worked on the BASK Simulation Consensus Committee between 2015 to 2018. He is the current Knee Fellowship Director at the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford and the Major Revision Knee Arthroplasty Network Lead for Southeast UK (Thames Valley Region). He also serves on the BAJIR (Bone and Joint Infection Registry) Committee as an Executive Committee member. He is also an Executive Committee Member of the 2025 International Consensus Meeting on Prosthetic Joint Infection.


Rahul Bhattacharyya (Glasgow)
Mr Rahul Bhattacharyya is a Consultant Orthopaedic Knee Surgeon at NHS Lanarkshire University Hospitals and Ross Hall Hospital Glasgow. He is also an Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) at Imperial College London. He is currently member of the executive committee of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK).
His clinical interests are focussed entirely around surgery of the knee with a special interest in sports knee injuries with experience in treating elite level athletes. This includes keyhole surgery (arthroscopy), meniscal repair and meniscal allograft transplantation, ligament (cruciate and collateral) repair and reconstruction, cartilage repair and knee cap (patella) stabilisation surgery. He also treats patients with arthritis with a focus on knee joint preservation wherever possible. This ranges from physiotherapy to knee joint injections (steroid, Hyaluronic acid, PRP, biologics), joint realignment surgery, partial and total knee joint replacement. He is trained in robotic assisted knee replacements.


Rahul Patel
Rahul Patel is a Consultant in Trauma & Orthopaedics at the University College Hospital, London. He is actively involved in the training of higher surgical trainees on the London orthopaedic rotations and is also a co-developer and course tutor on the MSc in Sports Medicine, Exercise & Health at University College London. He is an Honorary Associate Professor of University College London. In 2016 Rahul was the President of the Orthopaedics section at the Royal Society of Medicine and is currently a member for the Executive Committee for the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK).
Rahul Patel qualified from The Royal Free Hospital School of Medicine. He trained in surgery at various London teaching hospitals before undertaking a formal two-year research period culminating in a higher degree from the University of London. His specialist orthopaedic training was on the Middlesex/University College Hospital, London rotation. Rahul then undertook subspecialist fellowship training in reconstructive arthroscopy and sports orthopaedic surgery at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada and at the Steadman-Hawkins Clinic, Vail, USA.
Amongst others, he is a member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA) and recent faculty, International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery and Orthopaedic Sports Medicine (ISAKOS), the European Society of Sports Traumatology, Knee Surgery and Arthroscopy (ESSKA) and the International Cartilage Repair Society (ICRS).


Oday Al-Dadah (Newcastle)
Oday Al-Dadah is a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon at South Tyneside Hospital with a special interest in reconstructive knee surgery and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer at the Translational and Clinical Research Institute at Newcastle University. He’s from Ayrshire and graduated from Dundee University Medical School. He completed his higher surgical training as a specialist registrar on the Cambridge training programme. He then completed sub-specialist fellowship training at the Professorial Knee Unit in Southampton and also the Avon Orthopaedic Centre in Bristol.
His consultant practice includes all aspects of knee surgery ranging from sports injuries to joint replacement surgery. Arthroscopic cartilage and meniscus surgery ranging from meniscectomy and meniscal repair right through to allograft meniscus transplant and cartilage transplant surgery of the knee. His ligament surgery armamentarium includes anterior and posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction as well as medial collateral ligament and postero-lateral corner reconstruction. For young adult patients with arthritis he performs peri-articular knee realignment osteotomies including high tibial osteotomy and distal femoral osteotomy. He performs a high number of partial knee joint replacements using minimally invasive techniques encompassing medial and lateral uni-compartmental knee replacement, patello-femoral joint replacement and segmental bi-compartmental knee replacement. He led and developed the highly successful and innovative day case joint replacement programme at his hospital. He has considerable experience in complex primary and revision knee arthroplasty. He also has an interest in complex knee trauma including peri-articular and peri-prosthetic knee fractures and knee dislocations. He is experienced in paediatric knee surgery too. He also performs surgery for patella instability including medial patello-femoral ligament reconstruction, tibial tuberosity transfer and trochleoplasty.
Oday Al-Dadah completed his Doctorate Thesis on the topic of cruciate ligament and meniscus surgery during his research fellowship within his time as a specialist registrar. He has presented his research both nationally and internationally and has won numerous prizes and gold medals for best podium presentations. He has many publications in peer reviewed journals. He has successfully supervised many research fellows at Newcastle University most of whom achieve distinctions and merit level awards for their thesis. He is the Editor-in-Chief of The Knee journal where he has the privilege of working with an international editorial board of esteemed academic knee surgeons from all over the world. He is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association (BOA) and privileged to be an executive board member of the British Association for Surgery of the Knee (BASK).

Jaison Patel
Jaison Patel is a consultant at Bart’s Health which includes one of the biggest trauma units in Europe at The Royal London Hospital. He specialises in all aspects of knee surgery including total, partial and revision knee replacements, sports injuries of the knee, patellofemoral conditions and osteotomy surgery.
He leads the North-East London Complex Revision Knee Arthroplasty Network and is an honorary senior lecturer at Queen Mary University of London Medical School.
Jaison completed his undergraduate training at Barts and The London School of Medicine. He continued his higher surgical training on the East of England training programme where he rotated through hospitals including Addenbrookes in Cambridge. He completed his fellowship training at the world-renowned Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford.
Jaison is passionate about educating the future generation of surgeons. He completed further training in Healthcare Education at the University of Warwick and held educational roles with The University of Cambridge Medical School. He is a regular faculty member on national knee surgery courses and has written chapters for orthopaedic textbooks.
Jaison provides his patients with the best evidence-based treatments. He is actively engaged in research, having published multiple studies in medical journals and is frequently invited to present at international conferences. The delivery of better care to patients is at the heart of Jaison’s ethos and drove him to complete a healthcare leadership and management course with University of Cambridge Judge Business School.
As a BASK committee member Jaison hopes to develop knee surgery education to trainees, fellows consultants alongside supporting knee surgeons to provide their patients with the best possible care.

Secretary
The Secretary organises the programmes for the annual Spring meeting and BOA congress knee day, along with any other academic knee meetings that BASK is involved in (e.g. ESSKA). They organise the BASK AGM and Executive meetings, including the agenda, minutes and booking of venues. The BASK secretary liaises with the BOA and other specialist societies including international knee societies. They are also responsible for communicating with the membership on all BASK matters including selection of travelling fellowships and research grants. The post requires a reasonable commitment of time but is hugely rewarding.

Treasurer
The Treasurer is responsible for running the financial affairs of BASK, this includes day to day management especially for collection of membership fees and keeping the books up to date. The duties also involve ensuring oversight of the finances of each BASK annual congress. Finally, management of additional funding for the various fellowships that BASK supports. Education
The post holder will be expected to play a full role in Exec meetings and general Exec duties, responsibilities and tasks. They are be expected to have input into the content of BASK meetings as well as sessions that BASK are asked to provide at other meetings e.g.BOA/ESSKA. Research
The Research Lead has responsibility for defining the BASK research direction in association with the other members of the BASK executive team. They coordinate, collaborate and communicate research priorities within the BOA, NIHR, BASK membership and other subspecialty groups. They run the appointment process for the BASK research fellow. They set the knee research agenda by initiating the use of Priority Setting Partnerships and subsequently organising, supporting, and encouraging high quality collaborative research across the UK.

The Knee Journal Editor
The current UK Editor-of-The Knee Journal sits on the Executive committee as the Editor in chief of The Knee. In this capacity they keep the committee updated on the developments with the journal in order to reflect the readers’ opinions. They give an annual report to the Committee on the Impact factor, reviewer times and results of the publisher’s meetings.

Registries secretary
The assimilation and production of accurate, valid outcome data is an essential facet of a surgeon’s job plan. This position is responsible for overseeing the establishment and running of the National registries relating to knee surgery. This will include systems for effective data collection and management, report generation and integration with both industry and relevant (governmental and professional) organisations. An annual report of the progress and position of all registries is to be given at the annual congress.

There are posts on the BASK Executive in addition to the defined posts, who support the executive committee and membership in a number of roles. This has now been formalised and there will be a permanent post for an Executive member without a portfolio.

Junior Executive member
The Junior Executive member are now two posts, the first created during 2010. The posts are aimed to encourage newly appointed consultants (within 5 years of starting a substantive post) to become involved in BASK, with a view to continuing to be involved throughout their career. The post is tenable for two years, but is appointed annually to allow handover of duties. Their principal role is to assist the Education Secretary and attend the four BASK Executive meetings (two of which are held during the BASK / BOA annual meetings). The Executive are especially appreciative of the energy and enthusiasm that our younger colleagues bring to the Society.
